wow, i had another looong day! i picked up my friend Kouki and off to North Shore. I took the other way around the island this time to show Kouki the side of the island he doesn't see often. The drive was nice, but the best part was the stop at Kahuku Superette!
Poke and rice here is so good! Yep, this is the same place we stopped at after out costume surfing for Halloween. check out the webisode if you haven't seen it here!
We stopped by Mahina Maeda's house and picked Mahina and Sayuri Hashimoto and we went to Ehukai beach since we've heard the Snadbars is fun. There was the Pipe Masters going on but scored a really good parking, stoked!
It was little weird walking around hundreds of people to go surf... ha ha.
Checking the surf!
I think Mahina is ready to go out now!
i guess i should've checked the waves before i decided to shoot, cuz the current was so strong! just swimming out, i drifted like 4 miles! ha ha. nah, nah. but i was swimming HARD the whole time we were out there. my legs are so tired.
Reef Tsutsui, he was charging!
Ha'a Aikau was ripping as always. He's so used to shooting, he'd come right at me and bust out sick turns! I was shooting with my fisheye so he was about 2 feet away from me on this shot!
John Quizon, he's getting so good! His older sister Alessa better watch out! ha ha.
Mahina Maeda, can't believe she's still only 11!
There are so many little kids ripping these days, it's going to be really interesting to see them grow up! I'm so stoked i do what i do. i get to document these kids grow up!
It was really cool to be out there right next to where the Pipe Masters was going on.
I think we had the best seats! we can see the pro guys getting shacked at Pipe from the best angle!
When we came in from surfing, we were greeted by these two girls.
They were giving everyone candy canes. how awesome is that! Thank you girls!!
After our session at Ehukai, we went to V-land where we don't have to be fighting the current the whole time. no photos, cuz i decided to surf instead. sorry, but i gotta have my fun too! ha ha.
Right after our session at V-land, we rushed over to Turtle Bay for a Xmas parade! Ka'ena (Mahina's sister) plays the flute and she was in the parade!
(Sorry for crappy photos, we got there late and forgot to bring my camera out so i had to take these photos with my phone.)
Here's Ka'ena!
Being there at the parade brought back so many memories. I used to play the trumpet for my high school marching band (in southern california) and we went everywhere to play! we played at tons of different parades, marching band competitions, LA Raiders, LA Rams (yes, LA used to have football teams. ha ha), LA Dogers, and even flew to England to play for the Queen of England!
I think it's awesome when kids are involved in sports, music, art, dance, anything they are passionate about. i think if it wasn't for swimming, water polo and being in the band, i'd got into so much more trouble!
yes, i said "so much MORE trouble" because i still somehow found time to get in trouble... i don't know how i did it. i had 530am weight training every morning before school, 2 to 5pm swim or water polo practice every day after school, and 6pm to 9pm band practice a few times a week. yet i feel like i was dealing with cops every week... ha ha.
ok, back to Turtle Bay.
We ran into Malia and Noa Mizuno there too! had to take a nice xmas photo of them. well, i tried to take a "nice" photo but i guess kids thought we were taking a funny photo... ha ha.
They had cookies and juice for everyone and had xmas trees decorated by different elementary schools. i liked the one from Sunset Elementary the best! it was decorated with a real surfboard, tons of hand made surf related ornaments and a beach ball on the top! it's so Hawaii!
i liked it so much i made Ka'ena and Mahina pose infront of it!
Great job Ka'ena! Thanks to her parade, it's starting feel a lot like xmas!
On our (me and Kouki) way back to town, we stopped by Shiro's for dinner.
Like it says on the sign, this place is SAIMIN HEAVEN! they got something like 40 different kinds of saimins and they are all so good and cheap!
Even with 40 different kinds, i still love my large regular saimin! it's huge and only costs little over $5!
Another loooong day. super tired but where else in the world can you spend an awesome day like this in December. I have a feeling, tomorrow is going to be another amazing day!!
See you all tomorrow!
